LETTER WRITTEN TO ME DATED MAR 1 1997 FROM MY REQUEST TO WRITE ABOUT HIS YEARS TEACHING.

I'M HAPPY TO TELL YOU ABEOUT THE 2 YEARS I TAUGHT AT ME. GILEAD NEAR NORTON,KA. IN 1927 MY FA THER SAID MONEY DOES NOT GROW ON TREES IN THE DUST STORM PERIOD IN WESTERN KANSAS AND AID I S HOULD DROP OUT OF COLLEGE AT McPHERSON,KS AND FIND A JOB. CAN'T REMEMBER HOW I FOT THE JOB BU T MY FATHER WHO WAS WELL KNOWN IN THE COUNTY PROBABLY HELPED. SISTER RUTH FOLLOWED ME IN SAM E SCHOOL SO I PROBABLY DIDN'T CREATE A NEGATIVE IMPRESSION.
THERE WERE 21 STUDENTS IN ALL 8 GRADES. MY 8 GRADE STUDENT SYBIL WAS SMART AND I ENTERED HE R IN THE COUNTY SPELLING CLASS WHICH SHE WON FIRST PLACE. I FOT MUCH UNDESERVED CREDIT. REMEM BER KEEPING HER AFTER SCHOOL HAVING HER SPELL ALL WORDS IN SPELLING BOOK AS I PRONOUNCED THEM . HER TWIN BROTHER AND SISTER WERE IN THE 7TH GRADE. WHEN IN NOTON 1993 I HAD A 2 HR. VISI T WITH HIMA DN WIFE WHOM I DID NOT KNOW. HIS OLDER SISTER SYBIL AND TWIN HAD DIED AS WELL A S HHIS PARENTS MR. AND MRS. SHEFELMON.
one student neal was not mentally capable to do school work. i gave him aome "D"AND HID MOTHE R CAME TO LET ME KNOW I WAS NOT A GOOD TEACHER BECAUSE OTHER TEACHERS HAD GIVEN HIM PASSING G RADES! I FELT SO SORRY THAT I GAVE HIM LOW GRADES AS HIS MOTHER. I LATER REALIZED DIDN'T NEE D ME TO TELL HER THAT NEAL WAS NOT A NORMAL STUDENT. HIS 4th FRADE SISTER MAXINE WAS A SMAR T LITTLE STUDENT.
